Scania has introduced a new 6×2*4 electric bus chassis designed to support higher passenger capacity and greater flexibility for urban and regional routes, the Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer said on Wednesday.

The new three-axle variant, which builds on Scania’s electric bus platform first launched in 2023, targets medium- and heavy-duty operations in city, suburban, and shorter intercity segments. It complements the company’s existing 4×2 low-entry battery electric vehicle (LE BEV) configuration by offering additional rear-axle capacity and enhanced component flexibility.

“With a completely new e-machine, this three-axle electric variant is reliable, energy-efficient and powerful, thus providing excellent uptime, range, acceleration and startability, not least on steep slopes,” said Carl-Johan Lööf, Head of Product Management for People Transport Solutions at Scania.

The updated chassis includes a newly developed rear axle and a steered tag axle positioned behind the half shaft to enhance weight distribution and reduce tire wear. Scania says the platform also features improved modularity and serviceability, with noise-reducing sub-frame design and faster axle gear ratios to reduce internal losses. It uses the same charging interface and electric drive system — referred to by the company as its “e-machine” — as the previous platform.

The company noted that the chassis’ enhanced design supports improved vehicle uptime and aligns with local fleet requirements. “With the new rear position high-speed charging options and several more power nodes to choose from, it offers flexibility that translates to buses that fit local requirements,” Lööf added.

Scania, part of the Traton Group, says the new chassis builds on its electric bus offerings which currently include battery configurations of up to 520 kWh. These are designed to support ranges of over 400 to 500 km. The latest e-machine platform, announced in March, offers power outputs ranging from 240 kW to 330 kW and introduces new charging options, including a front port rated at 130 kW and a high-capacity rear port delivering up to 325 kW.

The company emphasized that the new chassis was developed with a focus on operational efficiency, sustainability, and service life extension — aligning with the broader industry push toward low-emission public transport solutions.
