PlusAI has formed a strategic partnership with Tokyo-based T2 Inc. to deploy Level 4 autonomous trucks in Japan, as the country looks to address chronic driver shortages and rising freight volumes.

The collaboration brings together T2’s local logistics expertise and system design capabilities with PlusAI’s experience deploying autonomous trucking solutions with global manufacturers. PlusAI said the partnership is supported by a strategic investment from Mitsui & Co., underscoring growing interest from Japanese industry in next-generation freight mobility.

“Backed by Mitsui, this partnership is about bringing the right capabilities together for Japan,” said David Liu. “T2 understands the unique requirements of Japan’s freight ecosystem, and PlusAI brings experience from commercial programs overseas.”

PlusAI is preparing to go public through a business combination with Churchill Capital Corp IX, and has established autonomous trucking programs with major manufacturers including TRATON Group, Iveco Group and Hyundai in the United States and Europe.

T2, meanwhile, has positioned itself as a domestic pioneer in autonomous logistics. The company launched Japan’s first commercial Level 2 autonomous trunk-line operations in July 2025, providing it with operational experience in the country’s tightly regulated transport environment.

Japan’s logistics sector is under increasing strain from an ageing workforce, a shrinking pool of professional drivers and steadily growing freight demand. Industry analysts and policymakers have highlighted autonomous trucking as a potential way to improve efficiency, safety and reliability across long-haul routes.

“T2 is focused on supporting Japan’s logistics by applying autonomous driving technology,” said Masatomo Kumabe. “Working with PlusAI, a company with demonstrated global expertise in autonomous trucking, positions us to accelerate the path toward safer, more efficient, more productive freight services in Japan.”

The companies said the partnership will focus on introducing Level 4 autonomous trucks tailored to Japanese road conditions, regulatory requirements and operational practices, with the longer-term aim of strengthening the country’s freight infrastructure.
