FAW Toyota, Toyota’s joint venture in China, is preparing to launch the 2027 bZ5 on Wednesday, marking the first annual refresh for the all-electric coupe SUV since its introduction in the Chinese market.
FAW Toyota announced the launch date on Weibo on Tuesday but has not yet disclosed pricing or the full specifications of the updated model.
Design and Dimensions
Based on an official image, the 2027 bZ5 will largely retain the current model’s exterior design. The refresh appears to focus more heavily on equipment and technology upgrades rather than major styling changes.

The updated bZ5 continues with a closed-off front grille, boomerang-shaped lighting elements and full-width light bars at both the front and rear.
Its dimensions are also expected to remain broadly unchanged. The current model measures 4,780 mm in length, 1,866 mm in width and 1,510 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,880 mm.
Interior and Technology
The current bZ5 features a minimalist cabin centered around a 15.6-inch touchscreen, along with a slim digital instrument cluster. The same basic interior layout is expected to carry over to the 2027 model.

Technology upgrades could be among the main changes introduced with the annual refresh, particularly as Toyota continues to adapt its EV lineup for China’s highly competitive electric vehicle market.
Driver-Assistance Upgrades
Driver assistance could be one of the key areas of development for the 2027 bZ5.
The current model uses Toyota Pilot, a driver-assistance system that combines Momenta 5.0 from Momenta with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). The system supports more than 30 functions, including navigation-assisted driving on urban and highway routes, as well as parking assistance.
Toyota could expand these capabilities with the 2027 refresh, although the company has not yet confirmed the specific changes.
Powertrain and Range
The current bZ5 uses a front-mounted single electric motor with a peak output of 200 kW. It is paired with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade batteries supplied by BYD.
Two battery options are currently available, with capacities of 65.28 kWh and 73.98 kWh. They provide CLTC driving ranges of 550 km and 630 km, respectively.

Whether the 2027 model receives changes to its motor, battery capacity or driving range remains to be confirmed. Powertrain updates could further improve the bZ5’s competitiveness against China’s growing range of electric SUVs.
Pricing and Market Position
The bZ5 was launched in China in June 2025 and has become an important model in Toyota’s efforts to compete with domestic EV manufacturers on pricing, technology and electric vehicle features.
The current lineup consists of six variants, with prices ranging from 129,800 yuan ($19,130) to 199,800 yuan.
FAW Toyota has yet to announce pricing for the 2027 bZ5. More details on its equipment, driver-assistance functions, powertrain and range are expected to be revealed at the official launch.
