The company stated it began the current year with 4,300 EVs and plans to transition the “vast majority” of its 23,000-strong diesel fleet to electric by the end of March 2031.
The move is central to the company’s environmental strategy. In a statement on its LinkedIn page, Openreach said: “This milestone is part of our #LetsReachZero strategy, as we work towards becoming a zero emissions business by March 2031. By upgrading the vast majority of our 23,000-strong fleet, we’re cutting emissions, improving air quality, and supporting the UK’s net zero goals.”

To support the transition, Openreach has been developing its charging infrastructure, which includes the installation of EV charging points at its operational sites and at engineers’ homes for overnight charging.
Furthermore, the network operator has an agreement with bus company First Bus, allowing Openreach engineers to utilize charging facilities at First Bus depots.
