Onvo, the mass-market electric vehicle sub-brand of Nio Inc, has launched a native application for Huawei’s HarmonyOS, extending its digital services to one of the world’s largest mobile operating systems.

Onvo president Shen Fei said in a post on Weibo on Wednesday that the HarmonyOS version of the Onvo app is now available through Huawei’s App Gallery, adding that the release responds directly to user demand on Huawei devices.

The move follows earlier steps by Nio to adapt its main-brand mobile application for HarmonyOS. That app has already been available via Huawei’s App Gallery, while Nio’s other sub-brand, Firefly, has yet to release a native HarmonyOS version. Firefly users can currently install the Android version of its app on Huawei devices using Zhuoyitong, an Android-based container that allows non-native applications to run on HarmonyOS.

HarmonyOS has gained prominence since Huawei accelerated development of its own operating system after U.S. sanctions restricted access to Google’s mobile services. The platform now powers Huawei smartphones, tablets, televisions and other consumer devices, positioning it alongside Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android as one of the world’s largest mobile operating systems.

Other automakers have also moved to support HarmonyOS. On Dec. 31, Tesla launched a native HarmonyOS app, offering features such as remote vehicle control, phone-as-key functionality, media management and climate control.

Huawei said last month that more than 27 million devices are now running HarmonyOS 5 and HarmonyOS 6, while the number of developers building applications for the platform has surpassed 10 million. For automakers, localising apps for HarmonyOS is increasingly seen as essential for maintaining digital engagement with Chinese consumers.
