The Nio ET5 and Nio EL7, two all-electric vehicles, have made history by becoming the first cars to achieve a perfect five-star rating in the updated Euro NCAP safety testing procedures. Euro NCAP introduced new testing protocols for 2023, which encompass cutting-edge features such as child presence detection, vehicle submergence, and advanced technologies designed to detect and respond to vulnerable road users like motorcyclists.
Both the Nio models were subjected to a rigorous examination of their safety capabilities, undergoing various scenarios that included car-to-motorcycle interactions, car-to-car crossings, car-to-car head-on collisions, dooring incidents, and driver-state monitoring tests. Remarkably, the ET5 and EL7 demonstrated exceptional performance in most of the evaluations, earning praise from the testing agency.
One of the notable accomplishments of the ET5 and EL7 was their ability to function effectively even when submerged in water. The cars successfully passed tests to prove that their doors and windows remain operational long enough for occupants to escape in the event of an emergency. These results highlight the significant progress made in the development of active safety technologies in recent years. However, the Nio vehicles still have room for improvement in more challenging scenarios, such as high-speed car-to-car crossings.
Michiel van Ratingen, the secretary general of Euro NCAP, acknowledged the demanding nature of the new rating system and commended Nio for rising to the challenge. He emphasized that as safety technologies become increasingly complex, Euro NCAP remains committed to adapting and anticipating changes in their rating scheme. Van Ratingen assured consumers that the organization will continue to push vehicle manufacturers to prioritize the safety of drivers and other road users.
Both the ET5 and EL7 boast an ultra-long-range LiDAR system, which not only lays the groundwork for future autonomous driving capabilities but also enhances their collision avoidance capabilities in the present. The integration of this advanced technology underscores Nio’s commitment to staying at the forefront of automotive safety innovation.
With their groundbreaking safety achievements, the Nio ET5 and EL7 electric vehicles have set a new standard in the industry, paving the way for safer and more advanced vehicles on our roads.
