NIO Celebrates 10,000th Battery Swap in Europe

Electric vehicle manufacturer NIO has achieved a significant milestone, completing its 10,000th battery swap in Europe. The achievement comes six months after the company’s service in China reached a cumulative total of 10 million battery swaps. The Norwegian app announced the news, revealing that the 10,000th swap occurred in Lier, Norway, on February 21. To celebrate the occasion, the user, Bjarte, received a specially engraved NIO Life bottle and a commemorative certificate.

NIO has continued to expand its battery swap infrastructure in Europe, with 11 stations in operation as of February 15 and six more scheduled to open soon. The company’s charging map also provides access to 388,000 third-party charging piles throughout Europe. The battery swap stations, which allow users to exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one in a matter of minutes, have proven popular in China and are an integral part of NIO’s energy replenishment strategy.

The expansion of NIO’s battery swap infrastructure in China is set to accelerate, with the company raising its goal from 400 to 1,000 new stations in 2023. NIO’s founder, chairman and CEO, William Li, announced the new target, which would bring the cumulative total to more than 2,300 stations by the end of 2023. Around 400 of the new stations will be located near highway service areas or entrances and exits, with the other 600 deployed in urban areas.

NIO is bringing its entire business model from China to Europe, with the ET7, EL7 and ET5 models now available in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. Deliveries of the ET7 started in October 2022, with the EL7 following on January 31 and the ET5 set to begin at the end of March. Initially offering only a vehicle leasing option in Europe, NIO has now added a purchase option, with deliveries of purchased vehicles set to begin in 2023.
