Montreal has announced plans to install 11,000 new electric vehicle (EV) charging points across its greater metropolitan area by 2030. These will be strategically located on roadsides, in publicly accessible car parks, and on publicly accessible private property. The city aims to significantly enhance its EV infrastructure to support the transition to sustainable transportation.
The initiative will focus on encouraging private sector participation through incentives and collaborations. Local businesses, such as petrol stations and grocery stores, are expected to play a role in providing charging points in their car parks, benefiting both employees and customers.
Montrealās efforts are aimed at increasing the availability of charging stations while ensuring that both the public and private sectors contribute to the expansion of the EV network.
Montreal’s strategy will center around three key pillars: the installation of additional municipal public charging stations, funding programs to help businesses and institutions electrify their fleets of both light and heavy vehicles, and the electrification of Bixi stations, a public bike-sharing system. These initiatives are designed to promote greater access to electric mobility options across the city.
Mayor ValĆ©rie Plante emphasized the importance of these efforts, noting that transportation accounts for 30% of the cityās greenhouse gas emissions. āWe want to make it easier for people to choose active mobility and electric vehicles. With a better supply of electric charging points, we want to make these mobility options more accessible and support the transition to sustainable mobility,ā said Plante.
