Mitsubishi Motors will introduce a new battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in the United States and Canada starting in summer 2026, as part of its long-term North American strategy, the company said on Wednesday. The upcoming model will be based on the next-generation Nissan Leaf and is being developed in cooperation with alliance partner Nissan Motor.

The announcement marks the first major product milestone under Mitsubishi’s ā€œMomentum 2030ā€ business plan, which pledges to launch ā€œa new or significantly revised vehicle every year between 2026 and 2030.ā€ The electric model will be sold through Mitsubishi dealerships across both countries, with additional details—including the vehicle’s name, specifications, and pricing—to be shared at a later date.

“Mitsubishi Motors is on an upward trajectory, especially in the United States,” said Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America. ā€œWhen we launched the Momentum 2030 long-term business plan to our dealer partners last May, there was a buzz in the room about an exciting future, but there was a desire for more concrete timing and plans.ā€

Chaffin added that the BEV project is part of Mitsubishi’s plan to offer a balanced portfolio that includes internal combustion, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles. “Our plan is clear, our path is mapped out,” he said. “The addition of this new battery-electric vehicle to our lineup will deliver a blend of internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, so that our customers have the choice of technology that best suits their needs.”

The vehicle will share its underlying platform with the redesigned Nissan Leaf, as the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance continues to leverage joint product development to reduce costs and accelerate EV adoption. Mitsubishi has not yet confirmed whether the vehicle will be assembled at Nissan’s U.S. facilities.
