Mercedes-Benz has given an early glimpse of the new GLB EV’s interior as the compact electric SUV nears its world premiere on December 8. The automaker said testing of the upcoming model is underway at its Mercedes Technology Center (MTC) in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Engineers are putting the GLB EV through extreme weather tests, exposing it to wind tunnel conditions ranging from -40 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Snow cannons simulate various snow types while high-powered fans generate winds up to 124 mph, recreating blizzard-like conditions.

Despite being cloaked in snow, the electric GLB retains its boxy silhouette, similar to its combustion-engine counterpart, though it appears to feature a larger grille inspired by the GLC EV.

Mercedes also revealed the GLB EV’s interior for the first time, showcasing a cabin dominated by large digital displays. The optional floating MBUX Superscreen spans the entire width of the dashboard, while the new multifunction steering wheel reintroduces a rocker switch for cruise control.

Other updates include concave door handles with floating center panels for storage and a redesigned center console that offers an optional wireless charging cradle and cup holders.

The German automaker said the new electric SUV provides “noticeably more headroom for first and second row occupants” and will come standard with five seats, with an optional third row for seven.

Mercedes added that the GLB EV enhances interior climate comfort, noting that its heating system warms up twice as fast as the current GLB at 19 degrees Fahrenheit while using only half the energy, improving both comfort and range efficiency.
