Mercedes-Benz has introduced the GLC L EV, a long-wheelbase version of its electric GLC, at Auto China in Beijing, as part of its strategy to tailor electric vehicles to Chinese customer preferences.
The GLC L EV follows a long-standing practice among European automakers of offering extended-wheelbase models in China to enhance rear-seat comfort. The vehicle measures 4.95 metres in length—104 millimetres longer than the standard version—while the wheelbase increases by 55 millimetres to 3.03 metres. Width and height remain unchanged.
Mercedes-Benz said the additional space is primarily intended to improve rear legroom and passenger comfort, a key requirement in the Chinese premium segment.
Unlike some competitors that use the extended wheelbase to accommodate larger batteries, Mercedes has opted for a slightly smaller battery pack. The GLC L EV is equipped with an 89 kWh battery, compared to 94 kWh in the global model, while still delivering a range of more than 700 kilometres under China’s CLTC test cycle.
The vehicle retains an 800-volt architecture, enabling fast charging performance. Mercedes said the system can add approximately 260 kilometres of range in around 10 minutes under optimal conditions.
There are also minor adjustments to the drivetrain. The GLC L EV delivers 310 kW of power, compared to 330 kW in the international GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ technology. The model continues to use the company’s eATS 2.0 drive unit with a two-speed transmission on the rear axle.
In terms of design, the model introduces Mercedes-Benz’s latest styling language to the Chinese market, featuring an illuminated front grille with more than 900 LEDs and rear light elements incorporating the brand’s signature star motif. The interior follows the brand’s current digital design approach, with a continuous glass panel integrating multiple displays.
The GLC L EV is also equipped with a range of comfort and technology features, including standard air suspension, heated and ventilated seats with massage functions, and a Burmester sound system. It also includes a 128-litre front trunk and advanced driver assistance systems such as highway and urban navigation assistance, as well as automated parking.
The launch follows Mercedes-Benz’s earlier introduction of a long-wheelbase electric Mercedes-Benz CLA L EV in China, highlighting the company’s continued focus on market-specific adaptations in its electric vehicle portfolio.
