MAN Truck & Bus has begun series production of its first battery-electric trucks equipped with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), becoming the first manufacturer in Europe to integrate the technology into regular production vehicles.

The electric trucks are being assembled at MAN’s Munich plant, with initial customer deliveries already underway across nine European countries.

MCS Charging Enables Faster Turnaround

The new MCS-equipped MAN eTGX and eTGS trucks support charging power of up to 750 kilowatts, significantly exceeding the 375-kilowatt maximum available through the Combined Charging System (CCS) currently used on the models.

According to MAN, the MCS interface operates at up to 1,000 amperes and 750 volts, reducing charging times for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

An eTGX or eTGS equipped with six battery packs and a usable battery capacity of 534 kilowatt-hours can be charged from 20% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

Vehicles fitted with seven battery packs and a total capacity of 623 kilowatt-hours require less than 40 minutes to complete the same charging cycle.

MAN said the shorter charging times enable drivers to recharge during legally required rest breaks while supporting daily operating distances of more than 1,000 kilometers for long-haul applications.

The company estimates a single-charge driving range of up to 570 kilometers between charging stops.

Deliveries Begin Across Europe

The first MCS-equipped electric trucks are being delivered to customers in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.

MAN said it is working with charging infrastructure manufacturers to ensure compatibility between vehicles, charging stations and backend software systems as the MCS ecosystem continues to develop.

The company has also participated in the NEFTON research projects led by the Technical University of Munich to support the rollout of high-power charging technology.

“The MCS ecosystem is currently at an important stage of market introduction. Vehicles, charging infrastructure and IT backend systems are evolving dynamically and hand in hand,” said Roman Sitte, Head of Sales Area Europe at MAN Truck & Bus.

Flexible Charging Configuration

In addition to the standard MCS charging port located on the front left side of the vehicle, customers can specify additional CCS charging connections.

Optional charging ports are available at the front right, while chassis variants can also be configured with charging connections on both sides of the rear section to improve compatibility with different depot and public charging layouts.

“With the first MCS vehicles, MAN is actively helping to establish the new charging standard in Europe and further strengthen interoperability throughout the overall system,” Sitte said.

MAN added that its fleet consulting services already incorporate existing and planned MCS charging infrastructure, while customers using the MAN Charge&Go service will have access to certified MCS and CCS charging stations as the network continues to expand.
