Finnish electric vehicle charger manufacturer Kempower has become the first in its sector to approve and adopt CableGuard, a forensic anti-theft solution developed by UK-based Formula Space, for use in its charging stations across Britain, Ireland and continental Europe.
CableGuard is designed to deter theft by encasing EV charging cables in a cut-resistant sleeve and adding a forensic marking system. If tampered with, the device releases a pressurised, UV-visible liquid that can be traced to offenders and surrounding objects. Formula Space says the technology has shown a 98% reduction in repeat attacks on marked infrastructure and a 100% conviction rate in court cases.
“A key element to driving forward the EV transition is instilling in people a feeling of trust and confidence in available charging infrastructure,” said Lee Barnett, Solutions & Service Manager for the UK and Ireland at Kempower. “We chose to lead the way and become Formula Space’s testing partner for CableGuard.”
The system, compatible with Kempower Satellites, Station Chargers and Movable Chargers using CCS2 and CHAdeMO cables, underwent an eight-week testing process before approval. Formula Space Director Vern Pollard said Kempower’s “significant experience and expertise” in physical charging infrastructure made it the ideal testing partner.
Kempower is the first equipment manufacturer to adopt CableGuard, though UK charging operator InstaVolt also uses the system. The move comes amid growing industry interest in anti-theft measures, with companies such as Evolt Charging, Chargepoint and Tesla introducing their own solutions in recent months.
