InstaVolt has introduced a new security measure called ‘CableGuard’, designed to protect electric vehicle (EV) charging cables from theft and tampering. The system, which can be retrofitted onto both new and existing cables, offers a range of physical and technological safeguards aimed at deterring theft and ensuring better security for the EV charging infrastructure.
The ‘CableGuard’ protection system includes a tough, flexible sheath constructed from high-wearing material, designed to be both durable and resistant to abrasion. Additionally, the sheath is integrated with forensic traceability technology. According to InstaVolt, each cable contains a forensic liquid that creates a unique, traceable mark visible under UV light. This feature, linked to a police-accessible database, enables authorities to track stolen cables back to specific locations, potentially aiding in the identification of culprits. A patent for the system is currently pending.

“The cable sheaths are not just protective but are also equipped with GPS and Geo-Tracking technology to monitor when a cable is removed from its designated charging site,” the company said. This combination of physical protection and high-tech tracking aims to combat the growing issue of cable theft, which has been a concern for charging point operators (CPOs).

The system is complemented by advanced security measures, including AI-powered CCTV systems and on-site patrols led by ex-military personnel, who are trained and cleared to detain individuals if necessary. Other CPOs, including Evolt Charging and Chargepoint, have also introduced similar anti-theft measures, as cable theft continues to increase and present significant financial challenges for the industry.
InstaVolt’s proactive approach adds a new layer of security to the growing network of EV charging stations, furthering the effort to ensure reliable and secure charging infrastructure as EV adoption continues to rise.
