Horizon Fuel Cell Group has announced a partnership with Shanghai Wuliu Automotive Technology to supply 100 fuel cell systems for use in Z Truck Automotive Technology’s 42-ton hydrogen-powered trucks. The agreement is part of a broader effort to advance zero-emission heavy-duty transport solutions in China.
The vehicles, equipped with Horizon’s VL-III Series fuel cell systems and integrated hydrogen storage, are expected to achieve a range of more than 1,500 kilometres on a single fueling. The long-range capability is aimed at addressing operational challenges in commercial logistics, particularly concerns around range limitations in zero-emission vehicles.
Since 2022, Horizon’s VL-III systems have seen deployment in various global markets. The company says these fuel cell units have demonstrated reliability in commercial operations across different regions, supporting their use in long-haul applications.
Horizon also announced plans to introduce its next-generation VLS-IV Series platform, a 400-kilowatt fuel cell stack designed to reduce hydrogen consumption by up to 20% while improving durability. The new platform is intended to further expand the feasibility of hydrogen in heavy-duty applications by lowering fuel costs and enhancing operational efficiency.
The partnership with Shanghai Wuliu and supply of 100 fuel cell systems follow other fleet-level deals that the company has secured in recent quarters. Horizon stated that such collaborations reinforce its role in supporting the development of hydrogen-based transport and underscore its commitment to innovation in fuel cell technology.
The initiative comes amid increasing interest in hydrogen as an alternative to diesel for commercial fleets. Efforts to reduce carbon emissions across global supply chains have led to renewed focus on long-range, zero-emission solutions for freight transport.
