SAIC Volkswagen, the Chinese joint venture between Volkswagen and SAIC Motor, has filed its ID. ERA 5X electric SUV with Chinese regulators, bringing the compact model closer to production and making it the first battery-electric vehicle in the ID. ERA family.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) included the five-seat SUV in its latest vehicle catalog published on Friday. The filing consists of two pages and provides details of the vehicle’s dimensions, drivetrain and battery supplier.
Compact SUV Uses 155-KW Electric Motor
The ID. ERA 5X measures 4,560 mm long, 1,896 mm wide and 1,630 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,815 mm.
The five-seat SUV is equipped with an electric motor supplied by United Automotive Electronic Systems. The motor produces a peak 155 kW, while the vehicle’s top speed is listed at 175 km/h.
Power comes from a lithium iron phosphate battery using cells supplied by CATL.
SAIC Volkswagen released additional official images after the regulatory filing, providing a closer look at the exterior design of the upcoming model.
First Volkswagen Model Based On China Main Platform
The ID. ERA 5X will be Volkswagen’s first production vehicle globally to use the CMP, or China Main Platform, together with the CEA China Electronic Architecture.
CEA was developed jointly by Volkswagen and Chinese EV maker Xpeng as part of the German automaker’s broader strategy of adapting its vehicle technology and development approach to the Chinese market.
FAW-Volkswagen’s ID. AURA T6, which entered China’s regulatory filing process last month, was the first vehicle to use the CEA architecture.
The ID. ERA 5X therefore represents a significant step in Volkswagen’s efforts to introduce locally developed technology into its Chinese electric vehicle portfolio.
ID. ERA Lineup Expands Ahead Of Sedan Launch
The filing arrives as SAIC Volkswagen prepares to expand the ID. ERA family beyond its current SUV offering.
The automaker said the ID. ERA 5S sedan will enter pre-sales on Aug. 11 and is scheduled for an official launch during the third quarter.
The ID. ERA 5S is also positioned as a technology-focused model and will be Volkswagen’s first sedan globally to offer urban NOA, or Navigate on Autopilot, functionality.
At present, the ID. ERA lineup has one model on sale in China: the ID. ERA 9X range-extended SUV, which was launched in March.
The arrival of the ID. ERA 5X and the upcoming ID. ERA 5S will broaden the lineup with both a compact electric SUV and a sedan, while deepening Volkswagen’s use of Chinese-developed vehicle architecture and electronic systems.
The new models form part of Volkswagen’s wider effort to strengthen its position in China’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market through closer local partnerships and faster product development.
