Electric vehicles (EVs) are not only environmentally friendly but also offer substantial savings on maintenance. According to new data from The Car Expert, EVs are nearly 30% cheaper to service over five years compared to gasoline, diesel, and hybrid cars. With EV sales in the UK surging 35% in 2025, they now account for over 20% of all new car registrations.
The analysis, which examined over 600 new and near-new vehicles in the UK in 2025, revealed that EVs were cheaper to service in 95% of like-for-like model comparisons. These savings are attributed to EVs’ simpler design, which includes fewer moving parts and a reduced need for maintenance.
Unlike their gasoline or diesel counterparts, EVs do not require oil changes, and their regenerative braking systems help extend the life of brake components.
For example, the Vauxhall Corsa Electric costs 31% less to service during its first three years and 32% less from years three to five, compared to the gasoline version. Similarly, the Fiat 500e offers savings of 34% in the first few years and 31% in later years.
The all-electric MINI Countryman also shows significant reductions in service costs, with an 18% saving initially and 22% savings in subsequent years.
This analysis highlights the growing appeal of EVs for both individual consumers and fleet managers, particularly those with high-mileage requirements. The Car Expert’s Expert Rating Index, which incorporates service, insurance, and emissions data, offers valuable guidance for those seeking cost-effective vehicles.
