Elon Musk announced Thursday that Grok, the large language model developed by his artificial intelligence startup xAI, will be integrated into Tesla vehicles beginning as early as next week. The move marks a deeper collaboration between the two Musk-led companies and signals the automaker’s first in-vehicle application of a conversational AI system.
“Grok is coming to Tesla vehicles very soon. Next week at the latest,” Musk said in a post on social media platform X, shortly after xAI livestreamed the release of its latest model, Grok 4.
During the livestream, Musk and members of the xAI team showcased Grok 4’s enhanced voice interaction capabilities and performance metrics. The new model is being positioned as a rival to large language models developed by OpenAI and Google.
The planned in-car rollout represents a shift for Tesla, which has historically relied on internally developed AI systems for autonomous driving and energy optimization. Grok’s integration introduces a conversational interface into the vehicle, potentially enhancing user interaction for navigation, infotainment, and real-time assistance.
The launch builds on growing business ties between Tesla and xAI. According to a Bloomberg News report, Tesla reported $198.3 million in revenue from commercial, consulting, and support agreements with xAI, including sales of Megapack energy storage systems.
In July 2023, Musk conducted a poll on X asking followers whether Tesla should invest $5 billion in xAI. While no official investment has been made, 68% of respondents supported the idea. Musk later said, “This will be discussed at the Tesla board,” indicating the proposal remains under consideration.
Grok’s deployment in Tesla vehicles further reflects Musk’s strategy to create synergy across his ventures in artificial intelligence, electric transportation, and energy infrastructure.
