Sales of electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, in the United States this year jumped 41 percent from last year. Electric vehicle sales are currently up 6.2 percent of all new vehicle sales, up 3.6 percent compared to the first half of 2021.
According to Urban Science, an automotive consultancy and technology firm, as electric vehicles become more widely available across the country, they’re starting to see a big spike in sales. This is despite the fact that sales of other vehicles fell in the first six months of 2022.
California had the highest sales volume of around 133,920 units in the first half of the year. That number represents a third of the nation’s total EV sales.
Florida is in second place with sales of 33,006 electric vehicles in the Sunshine State. That’s 100,000 fewer than California, which saw a 64 percent year-over-year increase.
“This increase in Florida has made the entire Southeast region the fastest growing region today for customer popularity,” Mitch Phillips, Urban Science Director of Global Data.
New York, Texas and New Jersey round out the top five states for the highest EV sales. Therefore, New York is only a difference of about 1,000 units of electric vehicles from the total sales in Florida.
Urban Science expects the number of new vehicles sold in 2022 to fall slightly compared to 2021. Dealers are expected to sell five fewer vehicles this year compared to 2021.
