Candela, the Swedish electric boat manufacturer, has shattered the previous endurance record for electric boats, showcasing the potential of electric marine transportation. The previous record, standing at 79 nautical miles (146 km) in 20 hours, was eclipsed by the Candela C-8’s astonishing performance.
The groundbreaking record run took place on a 20-nautical-mile circuit, running between Stockholm Freeport and the island of Tynningö. The primary objective of this endeavor was to demonstrate fast-charging capabilities, underscoring the viability of electric boats for extended journeys.

After completing each lap, the Candela C-8 underwent an intermediate DC charge. The charging process utilized a DC charger supplied by the company Plug, complemented by the use of the mobile battery storage system, Voltpack, provided by Northvolt, boasting an impressive capacity of 281 kWh as the energy source. Over the course of the 24-hour challenge, the C-8 underwent a total of 313 minutes of charging, receiving a cumulative 615 kWh of electrical energy.
The intermediate charging sessions, which boosted the state of charge (SoC) from approximately 13 percent to 66 percent, took a mere 18 minutes each, resulting in an average charging speed of approximately 118 kW. Accounting for the charging intervals, the electric boat maintained an average speed of just over 17 knots (31 kph), while the target speed during the journey was an impressive 27 knots (50 kph).
