BYD’s Shark pickup truck achieved exports of over 10,000 units in 2024, marking a significant milestone for the company’s expansion in the global pickup market. The Shark’s December exports reached 3,410 units, bringing its full-year total to 11,038 units, BYD announced on its Weibo account.
While the specific manufacturing location was not disclosed, media reports suggest production takes place in Zhengzhou, Henan province. Notably, the Shark is not available in the domestic Chinese market. BYD launched the hybrid pickup in Mexico on May 14, 2024, marking one of the rare occasions a new model debuted overseas.
The Shark is offered in Mexico in two variants, GL and GS, priced at 899,980 and 969,800 Mexican pesos ($43,430 and $46,790), respectively. Built on BYD’s DMO platform, the Shark is powered by dual electric motors producing over 430 horsepower and achieving 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The vehicle features a blade battery with a capacity of 29.58 kWh, delivering a combined NEDC range of 840 kilometers, including 100 kilometers on electric power alone.
With an NEDC low-charge fuel consumption of 7.5 L/100 km, the Shark offers a 40% fuel efficiency improvement over conventional pickups. Initially launched in Mexico, the model has since expanded to markets including Panama, Brazil, Cambodia, and Australia, where it has been rebranded as the Shark 6 in select regions.
