China’s BYD has removed its popular Song Plus models from the Ocean lineup as part of a broader effort to streamline and clarify its product portfolio, according to information published on the company’s China website.
Following the change, BYD’s Ocean lineup now consists of the Seal, Sealion, Seagull and Dolphin series, all of which follow the brand’s marine-themed naming convention. The Song Plus EV and Song Plus DM-i hybrid had been the only models simultaneously positioned within both BYD’s Ocean lineup and its Dynasty lineup, which is named after ancient Chinese dynasties.

Market speculation emerged in October that BYD was preparing to discontinue the Song Plus. The company later said the move reflected a normal product transition, with the Sealion 06 positioned as the successor to the Song Plus within the Ocean range.
BYD launched its Dynasty lineup in 2012, featuring models such as Qin, Tang, Song, Yuan and Han. The Ocean lineup, introduced later, adopts a distinct identity based on marine life and vessels, including models such as Seal and Frigate 07. When the Ocean range debuted in 2021, BYD included the Song Plus DM-i hybrid SUV to broaden the lineup before its eventual repositioning.

In overseas markets, the Song Plus DM-i has been sold under different names, including Sealion 6 and Seal U DM-i, reflecting BYD’s efforts to align global branding with its Ocean-series strategy.
The Song series has historically been one of BYD’s strongest sellers. In 2025, the broader Song lineup sold 788,003 units, accounting for more than 17% of the group’s annual vehicle sales. However, sales momentum has softened, with the Song Plus in the Ocean lineup declining more than 21% year on year in 2025, while the Dynasty-version Song fell about 20%.

Since mid-2025, BYD’s Qin series has overtaken the Song range as the company’s top-selling lineup, underscoring a shift in demand as BYD refreshes its model structure and naming consistency across its expanding portfolio.
