BYD has launched its Xia multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in Mexico under the name M9, marking its first hybrid MPV offering in the country and extending its reach into the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) segment in Latin America. The model debuted in Mexico on June 25 and is being offered in a single variant starting at 979,800 Mexican pesos ($52,180), the company announced.
The BYD M9 features a three-row, seven-seat layout and is built on the automaker’s fifth-generation DM hybrid platform. It offers an NEDC-rated electric-only range of 95 kilometers and a total range of 945 kilometers when fully charged and fueled.
Ray Zou, country manager of BYD Mexico, described the launch as a strategic milestone. “The introduction of the Xia is an important strategic move for BYD in Mexico’s premium NEV market,” he said.
The Xia was initially launched in China on January 8 and is available there in four variants, with starting prices ranging from RMB 249,800 ($34,870) to RMB 309,800. Measuring 5,145 mm in length with a 3,045 mm wheelbase, the MPV aims to meet growing demand for large, family-oriented hybrid vehicles.
BYD continues to post strong sales across its NEV portfolio. The company reported record monthly sales in June with 382,585 units sold globally. The Xia contributed 5,018 units to that total in June, bringing cumulative sales of the model to 47,785 units. Overseas sales reached 90,049 vehicles last month, a 233.6% increase compared to June 2024.
However, the company’s manufacturing ambitions in Mexico face new challenges. A Bloomberg report earlier today said BYD has paused plans to build a major production facility in the country due to rising geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade policy.
