BYD has applied for regulatory approval in China for its new electric sedan, the Seal 08, a model positioned as the sibling of the upcoming Qin L EV, according to official documents. The vehicle is expected to debut later this year, with a starting price below 150,000 yuan ($20,000).
The Seal 08 will be available in two powertrain configurationsâ110 kW and 160 kWâand offer battery capacities of 46.1 kWh and 56.6 kWh. Measuring 4.72 meters in length, the model closely mirrors the Qin L EV, for which BYD submitted approval documents last week. Both models are part of BYDâs strategy to market technically similar vehicles under its Dynasty and Ocean series, targeting distinct consumer segments in China.

While the Dynasty series, featuring models like the Han and Tang EVs, caters to a mature audience with premium design elements, the Ocean seriesâhome to the Dolphin and Sealâaims to attract younger buyers with its fluid aesthetics. The Seal 08 and Qin L EV are positioned in the affordable electric sedan segment, with reports from CarNewsChina suggesting a sub-150,000 yuan price point for the base variant.
The Seal 08 will be powered by BYDâs proprietary Blade battery, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit. Dimensionally, it measures 4.71 meters in length, 1.88 meters in width, and 1.50 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.82 metersâidentical to the Qin L EV. The vehicleâs curb weight ranges between 1,670 kg and 1,800 kg, depending on the selected powertrain.
