BMW will introduce integrated Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology in its all-new 5 Series sedan in China beginning January 2025, marking a significant step forward in connected vehicle development. The German automaker partnered with intelligent automotive systems supplier JOYNEXT to implement the new technology, which is designed to improve road safety and traffic efficiency while supporting the transition toward smart urban infrastructure.
The V2X system allows vehicles to communicate with traffic lights, nearby cars, pedestrians, and cloud services in real time. According to BMW, this connectivity enables features such as early collision warnings, traffic flow optimization, and alerts for hazardous driving conditions. “By incorporating V2X in the 5 Series, we are providing drivers with smarter, more proactive safety tools,” a BMW spokesperson said.

This marks the first time V2X functionality has been integrated into a BMW model. The technology aims to support broader efforts in building smart city infrastructure by connecting vehicles to their surroundings. The system facilitates low-latency communication, enabling faster decision-making and contributing to a more responsive transport network.
JOYNEXT, which specializes in connectivity and autonomous driving solutions, brings its expertise to the project through an established track record in developing vehicle communication platforms. The companies said their collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and intelligent mobility. “This partnership demonstrates how two technology leaders can jointly shape the future of urban mobility,” a JOYNEXT representative added.

BMW’s move aligns with a growing industry push to deploy V2X systems as part of global smart city initiatives. As more urban areas adopt connected infrastructure, automakers are expected to play a critical role in ensuring vehicles can safely interact with these environments. The V2X-enabled BMW 5 Series is set to be a part of that transition, offering drivers in China an early glimpse of how next-generation communication technology could transform daily commutes.
