BMW has opened an additional body shop to support its Regensburg factory, increasing production capacity as demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow. The new facility, located in Neutraubling, spans approximately 40,000 square meters and currently produces around 120 car bodies per day. The expansion allows BMW to manufacture the BMW X1 series in both Regensburg and Neutraubling, rather than relying solely on the existing body shop.
The new production hall was developed in under a year, with BMW converting an existing site previously used for logistics. The company obtained a change-of-use approval in April 2024, allowing the dismantling of old infrastructure and the installation of new body shop equipment to proceed simultaneously.

The first test bodies were produced in January 2024, and ramp-up of production began in March. Currently, around 150 employees work at the Neutraubling facility in single-shift operation, assisted by 294 industrial robots.
BMW’s Regensburg plant has experienced a significant increase in output, producing 342,500 vehicles in 2024—more than 100,000 units above its 2023 production volume. More than a third of the vehicles built in 2024 were either plug-in hybrid or fully electric models, including the iX1 and iX2.
“Once completed, the bodies from Neutraubling are transported to the vehicle plant in Regensburg, where they are assembled into finished cars around the clock in three-shift operation,” the automaker stated.

As part of BMW’s transition toward its Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform, the Regensburg factory is undergoing further upgrades. In late 2024, modifications were made to the body shop, paint shop, and vehicle assembly areas to accommodate future production needs. The plant is set to undergo additional structural changes during a five-week production pause in the summer of 2025, preparing for the next generation of electrified models.
