French aviation startup Beyond Aero has introduced improvements to its hydrogen-electric light aircraft as it moves toward certification, aiming for commercial deliveries by 2030. The company has also secured backing from industry figures to accelerate development.
Since unveiling the concept at Le Bourget in June 2023, Beyond Aero has enhanced the aircraft’s safety and efficiency. The updated design features a battery-free hydrogen fuel cell system, powering two electric engines through independent channels for improved reliability. The fuel cell’s output has been increased to 2.4 megawatts.

“We have designed a modular system that enhances reliability and scalability while exceeding industry safety standards,” Beyond Aero said in a statement. The company also adjusted the positioning of gaseous hydrogen storage, integrating 700-bar tanks above the wing box to improve crash resistance. High-pressure fuel lines have been removed from the pressurized cabin to align with aerospace safety protocols.
The BYA-1 light jet features an all-electric powertrain with 90% fewer moving parts than conventional aircraft, reducing maintenance complexity and cutting operating costs by up to 55%, according to Beyond Aero. The aircraft seats six passengers, has a cruising speed of 310 knots (575 kph), and a range of 800 nautical miles (1,500 km), covering around 80% of European flight routes. It requires only 620 meters for takeoff, making it compatible with airports such as London City.
