European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday urged a continent-wide effort to advance self-driving cars, saying artificial intelligence could help revive Europe’s struggling automotive industry and improve road safety. “Self-driving cars are already a reality in the United States and China. The same should be true here in Europe,” von der Leyen said at the Italian Tech Week in Turin, Italy’s automotive hub. She added that an “AI first” approach also meant “safety first.” Her remarks come as Brussels seeks to reinforce industrial competitiveness while European carmakers face pressure from U.S. and Chinese rivals advancing in autonomous technology.…
German specialty chemicals company IBU-tec has launched a new facility at its Weimar site dedicated to recycling battery raw materials, developed in partnership with machine manufacturer Hosokawa Alpine. The move marks a step into the expanding market for energy storage recycling, complementing IBU-tec’s existing battery materials business. The plant is designed to process coated cathode foils from used batteries. IBU-tec contributed its expertise in battery material development, while Augsburg-based Hosokawa Alpine provided modern grinding and screening systems to improve efficiency. The facility will serve both in-house projects and external clients seeking recycling services. See also: IBU-Tec Advances Sodium-Ion Battery Technology…
Nissan said it is applying engineering lessons from its Z sports car to the all-new 2026 Leaf, seeking to ensure consistent handling, comfort and technology across different vehicle segments as part of its strategy to strengthen brand identity. The approach, which Nissan refers to as “Nissan-ness,” involves rotating engineers between projects ranging from sports cars to SUVs and electric vehicles. Engineers who worked on the Nissan Z were tasked with tuning the 2026 Leaf for North America, adapting sports car performance principles to an electric platform. General Motors has recalled more than 23,000 units of its 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV in the United States due to concerns that the pedestrian warning system may not produce sufficient sound at low speeds, according to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall, announced on September 30, covers Equinox EVs manufactured between August 8, 2023, and August 28, 2024. GM said some vehicles may have been fitted with incorrect software for the body control module (BCM), potentially causing them to fall short of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 141, which sets minimum sound…
Tesla has filed a patent for an inflatable aerodynamic deflector designed for its Cybertruck, aiming to improve towing efficiency by reducing drag when pulling a trailer. The Cybertruck, known for its stainless-steel exoskeleton and sharp-edged design, already offers a lower drag coefficient than most pickup trucks. However, towing remains a challenge as trailers generate significant aerodynamic drag.
