The BYD Dolphin Surf compact electric vehicle has received the highest possible five-star safety rating from European testing body Euro NCAP, with strong results across crash protection and driver-assistance systems.
The vehicle, which was recently launched across Europe and named World Urban Car of the Year, scored 82% for Adult Occupant protection and 86% for Child Occupant protection. Euro NCAP said the car provided good protection in side-barrier and side pole impact tests, awarding maximum points in the latter.
For Child Occupant protection, the vehicle achieved one of the strongest results in its class. In the Vulnerable Road Users category, it scored 76%, supported by the performance of its Autonomous Emergency Braking system in tests involving cyclists and motorcyclists. Safety Assist technologies, including driver monitoring and lane-departure support, earned a 77% rating.
“BYD is a technology company and the 120,000 engineers in our R&D division are constantly pushing to innovate and deliver better products for customers,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD. “This test result shows that with Dolphin Surf, there is also no compromise on safety.”
Euro NCAP noted that achieving a five-star rating is more challenging for compact vehicles, making the Dolphin Surf’s results a notable benchmark in the segment.
The verdict marks the eighth five-star Euro NCAP rating for BYD since it entered the European passenger car market in 2022. Other models with top scores include the Atto 3, Seal, Seal U, Seal U DM-i, Tang, and Sealion 7. The Sealion 7 holds the record for the highest Child Occupant protection score recorded by Euro NCAP.
