BYD has launched its new car carrier, the BYD Changzhou, marking an important step in expanding its transportation capabilities for the export of new energy vehicles (NEVs). The vessel, which is BYD’s second ro-ro ship, began operations after its delivery, as announced by Wang Junbao, general manager of BYD Corporate Division, on Weibo.
The BYD Changzhou, which departed from the ports of Lianyungang and Taicang in Jiangsu province, is on its way to Europe, carrying nearly 5,000 BYD NEVs. Wang highlighted the environmental benefits of the vessel, stating that it would contribute to cooling the planet by 1°C, though no further details were provided. The ship is the latest addition to BYD’s growing fleet of car carriers, following the launch of the BYD Hefei earlier this year.
With a length of 199.9 meters and a capacity to carry 7,000 vehicles, BYD Changzhou was built by CIMC Raffles and delivered to BYD on November 29. The vessel is named after the city of Changzhou, where BYD’s production site has been operating since January 2022. This marks the company’s second owned vessel, after the BYD Hefei, and the third overall in its fleet. Additionally, BYD has plans to add seven more ro-ro vessels over the next two years to further enhance its shipping capacity.
In terms of vehicle sales, BYD continued to see strong performance, with a record-breaking 506,804 NEVs sold in November, including 30,977 vehicles exported to international markets. While the company saw a slight dip in export numbers compared to October, its overall global sales have been consistently strong, marking a key milestone in BYD’s efforts to expand its international presence.
