Hyzon Motors, a U.S.-based leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, has successfully concluded a trial of North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered refuse collection truck. Conducted in partnership with Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery (MDRR) and New Way Trucks, the trial demonstrated hydrogen as a sustainable, zero-emission alternative for heavy-duty waste collection. The truck was tested on various routes across California, including Concord, Pittsburg, Oakley, Rio Vista, and Contra Costa.
Key trial outcomes included fuel efficiency gains of up to 300% compared to diesel trucks and a demonstrated range of at least 125 miles with 1,300 cart lifts. The trial aligns with California’s Advanced Clean Fleet requirements and MDRR’s sustainability goals, highlighting hydrogen’s potential to decarbonize waste and recycling operations without compromising performance.
“This successful trial showcases the potential for hydrogen to drive meaningful decarbonization in challenging sectors like waste and recycling,” said Parker Meeks, CEO of Hyzon. “We’re proud to collaborate with our partners to deliver solutions that provide both environmental and operational benefits.”
The refuse truck, developed with New Way Trucks, combines Hyzon’s advanced hydrogen fuel cell systems with New Way’s expertise in manufacturing refuse vehicles. Don Ross, Chief Sales Officer of New Way Trucks, added, “This collaboration offers a practical path for waste haulers to achieve zero-emission goals, setting a new industry standard.”
