First Hydrogen to Develop Left-Hand Drive Variant of Fuel Cell Vehicle for International Markets

First Hydrogen will configure a left-hand drive version of its hydrogen-powered fuel cell light commercial vehicle (FCEV) following successful trials in the UK. The company aims to offer the vehicle in the United States, Mexico, South America, and Europe.

With locations in Vancouver and Montreal in Canada, as well as London in the UK, First Hydrogen is well-positioned to expand its market reach. The company already has a German website, indicating potential plans to introduce its fuel-cell-powered transporter in the country, although this has not been officially confirmed. First Hydrogen has identified the European Union as a promising market. “The [EU] Commission will intensify its cooperation with international partners on clean hydrogen deployment and the development of hydrogen markets,” the company stated. An additional ā‚¬200 million investment by the Commission will support hydrogen ecosystems in specific areas such as ports, industrial zones, and airports, known as hydrogen valleys.

U.S. Coast Guard Approves First Hydrogen-Powered Vessel for Commercial Service

California, having recently launched the first hydrogen hub in the U.S., is another market of interest for First Hydrogen.

The manufacturerā€™s hydrogen-powered utility van offers a range of 600 to 1,000 kilometers and is available as a panel van and chassis cab. The vehicle’s electric drive units deliver a peak power of 220 to 300 kW, while the fuel cell system provides a net power of 90 kW. The van has been tested in the UK under various real-world conditions.

ā€œWe are excited to show markets the advantages of a hydrogen-power-fuel-cell vehicle,ā€ said Balraj Mann, Group CEO of First Hydrogen. ā€œDuring the Wales and West Utilities trial, in wintery conditions, we were able to demonstrate our FCEV was able to sustain performance levels, while with a battery electric vehicle, there is a loss of performance the colder the weather. Green hydrogen provides sustainability and zero emission reducing the carbon footprint and contributing to decarbonization goals.ā€

First Hydrogen’s strategic expansion into international markets reflects a growing interest in hydrogen technology as a sustainable alternative to traditional fuels.
