How to Swiftly Swap Your Nio EV Battery: A Quick Guide

NIO Battery Swap Station

In the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicles (EVs), Nio’s innovative battery swapping concept has gained significant traction in China and beyond. Originally pioneered by Nio and embraced by battery giant CATL, this groundbreaking approach to quick and efficient charging has made its way to Europe, with Nio’s Power Swap Stations becoming a familiar sight.

As of October 26, Nio boasts a network of 2,000 Power Swap Stations in China, complemented by 27 stations strategically positioned across Europe. With ambitious plans for expansion in the coming months, Nio aims to redefine the EV charging experience.

The fundamental premise is elegantly simple: rather than enduring a lengthy wait at a DC fast charging station, where charging to 80 percent State of Charge (SOC) can take half an hour or more, Nio’s Power Swap Stations offer a remarkable alternative. In a mere three to five minutes, drivers can opt for a swift battery swap, exchanging their depleted battery for a fully charged one.

The theoretical appeal of this concept is evident, but what does a real-life battery swapping session entail? How seamless is the process for drivers?

A Nio EL7 driver from Oslo, Norway, embarked on a unique endeavor to answer these questions. Documenting the entire experience through a video shared on her TikTok account (@iamstine), she provided a firsthand look at what a battery swapping session looks like from the driver’s perspective.

While various videos showcasing battery swaps at Nio stations have circulated online, this particular account stands out for its immersive approach, capturing the unfolding experience from behind the wheel.

The journey begins with a simple voice command from the driver, signaling the intent to swap the battery. The navigation system promptly suggests the closest battery swapping stations, allowing the user to make an informed choice. Upon selecting a station and initiating the order for battery swapping, the car takes charge, guiding the driver through the navigation to the selected station.

Upon arrival, if the station is prepared to accommodate a vehicle, the driver is directed to position the car within the designated “Start Area” on the asphalt. Subsequently, a straightforward press of the “Start Parking” button on the center screen sets the process in motion. The car autonomously maneuvers into the station, prompting the driver to initiate the battery swapping procedure.

Crucially, the driver is informed that any attempt to open a door, shift gears, or engage the brake pedal will interrupt the process. Additionally, the climate control system is temporarily disabled during the battery swapping process, prompting drivers to make any necessary adjustments to windows beforehand.

This unique glimpse into a Nio battery swapping session offers valuable insights into the user-friendly and efficient nature of this innovative approach, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of EV charging infrastructure. As Nio continues its global expansion, the adoption of battery swapping stations could reshape the landscape of electric vehicle usage, providing drivers with a swift and convenient alternative to traditional charging methods.
