Holland’s Lightyear Automotive made waves in the electric vehicle (EV) industry with the development of the Lightyear 0, the world’s most aerodynamic production car with solar panels that could go up to seven months without a charge. However, the company filed for bankruptcy just months after beginning production.
Now, several prototypes of the innovative EV have surfaced on a local online marketplace, offering a unique opportunity for interested buyers. Two of the prototypes are near-production examples and are currently being auctioned on the Troostwijkauctions website. The bidding for these two models has already reached €15,000 and €6,400, respectively.
One of the prototypes is finished in an intriguing matte brown color and was used as a static show car. It can only be driven at a maximum speed of 20 km/h (12 mph) and can only be charged with a laptop. The second prototype is painted silver, but there is no indication as to whether or not it is functional.
In addition to these two near-production prototypes, at least four other fully-built prototypes are available for purchase. Two of these still sport camouflage across their bodywork. There are also a handful of Lightyear 0 prototypes in various stages of assembly available, though none of them are functional.
But it’s not just the prototypes that are for sale. Various Lightyear battery packs, a complete electric powertrain, electric motors, and hundreds of different parts, including seats, are also available. Additionally, there are desks, computer monitors, an office seating area, conference tables, and chairs for sale.
The availability of these prototypes and parts presents a unique opportunity for interested buyers to acquire a piece of innovative EV technology. While the company’s bankruptcy was a setback, it is clear that the technology behind the Lightyear 0 still has value and potential in the EV industry.
