Chinese automaker SAIC Motor’s brand MG Motor is set to debut a new electric SUV, the MG 4X, at the Auto China in late April, as it expands its global electric vehicle portfolio.
The MG 4X is positioned as an SUV derivative of the MG4 Urban and has been revealed ahead of its official launch through regulatory filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
According to the filings, the compact SUV measures 4.50 metres in length, 1.85 metres in width and 1.62 metres in height, with a wheelbase of 2.74 metres. Depending on configuration, kerb weight ranges from 1,640 to 1,755 kilograms.
The model will be offered with two electric motor options. The entry-level version features a synchronous permanent-magnet motor delivering 125 kW, while a higher-performance variant produces 150 kW.
Built on SAIC’s E3 platform, the MG 4X adopts a front-wheel-drive configuration, similar to the MG4 Urban. This differs from the original MG4 EV, which is based on the MSP platform and uses rear-wheel drive.
Battery options will include a semi-solid-state system and a conventional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) alternative. The semi-solid battery, which uses a manganese-based chemistry with approximately 5% liquid electrolyte, is expected to offer a range of up to 510 kilometres under the CLTC standard, with improved thermal stability and cold-weather performance.
For driver assistance features, MG Motor has partnered with Horizon Robotics to integrate its “Navigate on Pilot” (NOA) system, along with automated parking capabilities.
MG said the MG 4X is designed for global markets, though specific launch timelines outside China have not yet been disclosed.
