Mercedes-AMG is expanding its electric GT family with the new GT 53 4-Door Coupé, positioning the model as a more affordable alternative to the recently unveiled flagship GT 63 4-Door Coupé.
The new variant differs from the range-topping model primarily in its electric powertrain. Instead of the three axial-flux motors used by the GT 63, the GT 53 is equipped with two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) delivering a combined system output of 400 kW.
Mercedes-AMG has been building anticipation for its new electric four-door GT for several months. The company showed a heavily camouflaged prototype during last year’s Formula 1 race in Las Vegas and named actor Brad Pitt as the face of the model. In March, Mercedes-AMG revealed the vehicle’s interior without disclosing that the model would be fully electric.
Two-Motor Powertrain Lowers Performance
The GT 53 uses a primary electric drive unit mounted on the rear axle, while a second PSM on the front axle functions as a boost motor.
A Disconnect Unit (DCU) can engage the front motor when additional power or traction is needed. Under low-load conditions, the system can decouple the front motor to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency.
The configuration delivers less performance than the flagship GT 63, but the GT 53 remains a high-performance electric model. Maximum torque is rated at 800 Nm, compared with 2,000 Nm for the GT 63.
The GT 53 accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 3.5 seconds using a one-foot rollout, compared with 2.1 seconds for the GT 63. From a standstill, the GT 53 reaches 100 kph in 3.9 seconds, while the GT 63 completes the sprint in 2.4 seconds.
Same Battery And 600 kW Charging
Despite its lower power output, the GT 53 retains the same 106 kWh battery pack and charging system as the GT 63.
Peak DC charging capacity reaches 600 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in about 11 minutes under suitable conditions. However, chargers capable of delivering 600 kW remain relatively uncommon.
The lower power output is expected to benefit efficiency and driving range. Mercedes-AMG estimates that the GT 53 will offer a WLTP range of more than 800 kilometres, significantly above the GT 63.
The model also marks a departure from the distinctive three-motor configuration introduced with the flagship electric GT. The GT 63 uses three axial-flux motors supplied by Yasa, the British electric motor specialist acquired by Mercedes-Benz in 2021.
The GT 63 is the first Mercedes production model to use the high-performance axial-flux motors, which have previously appeared primarily as supplementary boost motors in hybrid performance cars.
GT 53 Starts At €115,430 In Germany
Sales of the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupé in Germany are scheduled to begin on August 13, 2026, with prices starting at €115,430.
That puts the GT 53 well below the GT 55, which starts at €154,700, and the range-topping GT 63, priced from €196,350.
Mercedes-AMG has not yet confirmed whether it will introduce a still more affordable GT 43 variant. Such a model was previously available with the combustion-engine version of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé.
The GT 53 therefore broadens the electric GT range by trading some outright performance for a lower entry price and potentially greater efficiency, while retaining the battery capacity and rapid-charging technology of the flagship model.
