ABB has installed its first A400 ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers in Australia, deploying 400 kilowatt units at an Ampol Foodary service station on Sydney’s M4 Motorway as part of a charging hub designed for heavy-duty and long-haul electric vehicles.
The installation at the Eastern Creek Westbound site includes ten charging bays arranged in a drive-through layout to accommodate electric trucks and large vehicles, including those towing trailers. The companies said the configuration is aimed at reducing access constraints for commercial operators and supporting long-distance travel.

ABB said the site is the first in Australia to pair a 400 kW charger with its integrated energy management system. The setup uses ABB’s Terra Gateway Pro controller alongside digital monitoring tools to enable real-time supervision, remote configuration and intelligent control of power delivery. Power-sharing algorithms dynamically allocate available grid capacity across chargers during periods of high demand.
The company also introduced a redesigned user interface for the A400 chargers. ABB said the system was developed by engineers with backgrounds at Android and Google, allowing operators to integrate branding, messaging and promotional content while simplifying the charging process for drivers.

“We are thrilled to work with Ampol in this groundbreaking initiative,” said Sean Stove, ABB’s APAC e-mobility division manager. “The A400 chargers represent the future of EV charging, particularly for heavy vehicles and for public charging in general.”
Ampol said the project aligns with its broader strategy to expand alternative energy offerings across its retail network. “The installation of ABB’s A400 chargers is a significant step forward in our commitment to powering better journeys for our customers,” said Patrick Luxton, Ampol’s general manager for energy value chain.
