Xpeng has surprised the market by revealing the name and official image of its first model from the sub-brand codenamed Mona, ahead of its scheduled launch later this month.

The first vehicle in the Mona lineup will be called the Xpeng M03, as announced by the company on Weibo today. Interestingly, the model retains the Xpeng brand name, which has caused some confusion among industry observers.

The official image released by Xpeng showcases the M03 as a compact electric sedan, adding to the anticipation surrounding its launch.

Xpeng’s acquisition of Didi Global’s electric vehicle business in August 2023 paved the way for the Mona project. The company plans to position the Mona brand as a distinct offering from its main Xpeng-branded products.

Xpeng’s chairman and CEO announced at an AI Day event on May 20 that the first model from Mona would debut in June. Subsequently, during an earnings call on May 21, Xpeng management confirmed that the M03 would be unveiled in June and deliveries would commence in the third quarter.

Xpeng has high expectations for the Mona brand, believing that the M03 will be a standout product in the A-class all-electric market. The vehicle is expected to feature BYD batteries, similar to Nio’s Onvo sub-brand.

According to local media outlet 21jingji, the M03’s first model will have a range of more than 500 kilometers, with BYD supplying the batteries. This aligns with Xpeng’s strategy to offer a competitively priced smart electric model in the RMB 150,000 ($20,680) price segment.
