Xpeng’s Mona Sub-Brand to Feature BYD Batteries, Following Nio’s Onvo

XPeng diversifies EV batteries sources, CATL is no longer its largest supplier

Xpeng is reportedly set to utilize batteries from BYD in its Mona sub-brand, mirroring a strategy adopted by Nio for its Onvo sub-brand.

According to a report from local media outlet 21jingji, the Mona’s first model will incorporate batteries from BYD, offering a range of over 500 kilometers. This range is comparable to the entry-level version of Xpeng’s G6, which boasts a 580 km range and starts at RMB 179,900.

Xpeng’s decision to source batteries from BYD for the Mona sub-brand aligns with Nio’s recent partnership with BYD for its Onvo sub-brand, as reported by Reuters on May 7.

Xpeng announced plans to launch the Mona brand in 2024 when it acquired Didi Global’s EV business on August 28, 2023. Initially scheduled for a June debut, the launch of the Mona brand has been slightly delayed.

Production of Mona’s first model is underway at Xpeng’s plant in Zhaoqing, Guangdong province. Pilot cars have already completed the initial production trial phases and are set to enter pre-production (PP) and start of production (SOP) soon.

Unlike Nio, which appointed a former Disney executive, Ai Tiecheng, as president of Onvo, Xpeng has appointed in-house executive Jiang Wen to lead the Mona program.

Mona’s first vehicle, an A-class compact electric sedan priced between RMB 100,000 and RMB 150,000, will feature Xpeng’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). The vehicle is expected to be unveiled in June and available for sale and delivery in the third quarter of the year.
