SGMW, the joint venture between SAIC Motor, General Motors, and Liuzhou Wuling Motors, has experienced a notable increase in sales for its Wuling Bingo EV. The company reported selling 18,015 units of the electric vehicle (EV) during the past month, marking a month-on-month growth of 9.9%. This achievement brings the cumulative sales volume to an impressive 42,154 units, just over two months after its official launch.
The success of the Wuling Bingo EV can be partly attributed to its popularity among female buyers. According to the product manager of Wuling Bingo, approximately 68% of the current purchasers are women. Furthermore, customers between the ages of 31 and 40 constitute half of the overall customer base for the EV.
China witnessed the official launch of the Wuling Bingo EV on March 29, and by May 1, SGMW proudly announced the delivery of 16,383 units in April alone. Priced at 59,800 yuan (approximately $8,400 USD), the Wuling Bingo EV offers an appealing option to consumers in search of an affordable electric vehicle.
The Wuling Bingo EV is equipped with either a 17.3 kWh or 31.9 kWh LFP battery, providing respective driving ranges of 203 kilometers or 333 kilometers under China’s New Energy Vehicle Test Procedure (CLTC). With a price range of 59,800 to 83,800 yuan (approximately $8,400 to $11,800 USD), the Wuling Bingo EV caters to a wide range of budgets.
Stepping inside the cabin, drivers and passengers of the Wuling Bingo EV are greeted by a twin-screen setup. This configuration consists of a 7-inch instrument panel and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. These displays offer essential information and entertainment options to enhance the overall driving experience.
While the Wuling Bingo EV has garnered considerable attention and sales, it faces competition from the BYD Seagull in the Chinese market. Launched in late April, the BYD Seagull starts at 73,800 yuan (approximately $10,400 USD) for the version with a range of 305 kilometers. In comparison to the Wuling Bingo EV’s sales performance, the BYD Seagull sold 14,300 vehicles in May.
Additionally, another contender in the Chinese EV market is the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, also produced by Wuling. Starting at a more affordable price of 29,800 yuan (approximately $4,200 USD), the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV has captured a significant portion of the market. Notably, the high-end version of the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV shares the same price range as the Wuling Bingo EV. Consequently, Wuling’s top-selling model remains the low-end version of the Hongguang Mini EV, which recorded sales of 5,586 units in April.
The remarkable sales growth of the Wuling Bingo EV indicates a strong demand for affordable electric vehicles in the Chinese market. With its appealing features and competitive pricing, Wuling continues to make a significant impact in the EV industry.
