West Palm Beach, Florida, has introduced a pilot programme featuring a fully autonomous electric shuttle as part of a broader initiative to explore next-generation urban transportation solutions. The trial, which launched this week, is a collaboration between Guident, Related Ross, Circuit Transit, and Estonia-based Auve Tech, in coordination with the City of West Palm Beach.
The MiCa shuttle, developed by Auve Tech, will operate along a 0.9-mile public transit route using Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities. This classification allows the vehicle to navigate complex urban environments without human input, relying on a suite of sensors and software systems. The project aims to collect operational data, improve transit safety, and promote sustainable transport options in urban settings.
Jessica Keller, Transportation and Mobility Manager for the City of West Palm Beach, said the programme reflects the city’s commitment to innovation in public transport. “The City of West Palm Beach is pleased to be the site for this urban transportation pilot that will showcase innovation in tackling evolving transportation challenges,” she said.
The autonomous vehicle trial also seeks to enhance accessibility and reduce congestion while contributing insights that may influence broader transportation policies. Harald Braun, Chairman and CEO of Guident, which provides remote monitoring and teleoperation systems for autonomous vehicles, said, “Launching the MiCa pilot in West Palm Beach represents a significant leap forward in autonomous technology.”
The MiCa has already been tested in various international markets, including Europe and Asia, and its deployment in Florida marks its U.S. debut. The vehicle will operate in a mixed-traffic environment, serving both residents and visitors in the downtown area.
Private sector partners involved in the project emphasized the long-term vision behind the trial. “Integrating mobility solutions like the MiCa pilot lays the groundwork for a more vibrant, accessible downtown,” said Jordan Rathlev, Executive Senior Vice President at Related Ross. Alex Esposito, CEO of Circuit Transit, added, “Joining this AV project is a natural and exciting step as we look to continue innovating.”
