U.K.-based autonomous driving startup Wayve has launched an $85 million employee share sale, allowing staff to sell a portion of their vested equity in a tender offer backed by existing and new investors.
The transaction values the company at $8.5 billion, matching the valuation established during its $1.2 billion Series D funding round completed in February.
Second Employee Liquidity Event
The latest tender offer gives employees an opportunity to realize part of the value of their equity without waiting for an initial public offering or acquisition.
Wayve previously conducted a similar liquidity event alongside its $1.05 billion Series C funding round in May 2024.
Employee tender offers have become increasingly common among fast-growing artificial intelligence companies as a way to retain talent in a highly competitive hiring environment while rewarding long-serving employees.
Investor Demand Supports Share Sale
The tender offer is being funded by a combination of existing and new investors purchasing employee shares at the company’s current valuation.
Wayve’s most recent funding round was led by Eclipse, Balderton and SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with participation from Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Baillie Gifford, Microsoft, Nvidia and Uber.
Growing investor demand for leading AI startups has enabled companies such as Wayve to provide employee liquidity while remaining privately held.
Expanding Autonomous Driving Platform
Founded nine years ago, Wayve is developing an end-to-end neural network designed to learn driving behavior directly from real-world data rather than relying on high-definition maps traditionally used by autonomous driving systems.
The company believes this self-learning approach will enable its software to operate across different vehicle platforms, road conditions and countries with greater flexibility.
To support its development roadmap, Wayve has more than doubled its workforce over the past year, growing to approximately 1,200 employees.
Preparing for Commercial Deployment
Wayve plans to begin robotaxi pilot programmes with Uber later this year as it advances commercialization of its autonomous driving technology.
The company is also working with Nissan to integrate its AI-powered driving software into the automaker’s next-generation driver assistance systems, with deployment scheduled to begin in 2027.
