Volvo introduces side collision safety system to detect other road users in blind spots

Sweden’s largest truck manufacturer, Volvo Trucks, has again innovated by developing a new safety system to detect other road users entering blind spots on both sides of the truck.

The development of this technology answers where busy and congested traffic conditions often make it difficult for even the most experienced drivers to understand everything around their vehicles.

To improve safety and reduce stress on drivers, Volvo Trucks offers a new system that uses two radars on each side of the truck to detect when other road users, such as cyclists, enter a particularly risky blind spot.

Anna Wrige Berling, Director of Traffic Safety at Volvo Trucks explained that Volvo Trucks’ extensive accident research is based on decades of studies in real-life situations, and this new safety system helps drivers to prevent potential accidents.

“Accidents can happen in seconds. When someone is in the blind spot zone, a system called Side Collision Avoidance Support will notify the driver via a red light in the relevant rearview mirror.

“If the driver indicates a change of lane through the turn signal, the red light starts flashing and a warning sound comes from the side of a potential collision. The driver will be warned and can brake the truck when a cyclist passes suddenly,” said Anna.

The new system will be available globally on the Volvo FH, FM and FMX lineup of trucks with diesel, gas or electric drive starting in September this year. The Volvo FL and FE models will get a new safety system in 2023.

“At Volvo Trucks, our long-term vision is zero-accident, and safety is at the heart of everything we do. This new system is another example of our efforts to achieve that goal.”
