Volvo Cars has introduced Plug & Charge functionality for its EX90 electric SUV in the United States and plans to extend the feature to the upcoming EX60 when deliveries begin later this year, simplifying the public charging experience for EV drivers.
The technology allows charging sessions to start automatically when a vehicle is connected to a compatible charger, eliminating the need for mobile apps, RFID cards, or manual payment processes.
Automatic Authentication and Payment
With Plug & Charge activated, drivers only need to plug the charging cable into the vehicle. Authentication and payment are processed automatically between the vehicle and the charging network in the background.
Volvo said the feature is already available for the EX90 and will be included in the EX60 from its market launch in the United States.
The automaker added that the service works across participating charging networks, including Tesla’s Supercharger network and the IONNA charging network. Additional charging providers are expected to adopt the technology in the future.
Access to More Than 35,000 Charging Points
According to Volvo Cars, EX90 and future EX60 owners will have access to more than 35,000 compatible charging points across the United States.
Drivers can locate participating charging stations through the vehicles’ built-in Google Automotive operating system or through the Volvo Cars mobile application.
Charging stops compatible with Plug & Charge can also be incorporated automatically into route planning, helping drivers identify suitable charging locations during longer journeys.
Part of Volvo’s EV Expansion Strategy
The EX90, Volvo’s flagship battery-electric SUV, is already available in the U.S. market. The smaller EX60 electric SUV is scheduled to launch later this year.
The addition of Plug & Charge reflects a broader industry effort to simplify public charging by reducing the number of steps required to initiate a charging session.
Volvo Targets More Seamless Ownership Experience
Jim Nichols, Head of Product, Technology & Consumer Offer at Volvo Car Americas, said the feature aligns with the company’s approach to improving convenience for EV owners.
“The EX60 and EX90 reflect Volvo Cars’ vision for the future of mobility – vehicles that combine safety, sustainability, and human-centric technology,” Nichols said.
“With the addition of Plug & Charge, Volvo drivers can enjoy an even more seamless ownership experience, making public charging as simple as plugging in and walking away.”
As automakers continue expanding access to public charging networks, Plug & Charge technology is increasingly being adopted as a way to streamline the charging process and improve the overall electric vehicle ownership experience.
