Volkswagen confirms that it has started production of the ID.4 in Emden, Germany. ID.4 is also assembled at production facilities in Zwickau as well as at China’s factories in Anting and Foshan. ID.4 for the North American market will go into production at the Chattanooga production facility this fall.
Emden is the first high-tech location for electric vehicles in Lower Saxony. To set up an electric vehicle production facility in Emden, Volkswagen invested about one billion euros. Volkswagen will invest a total of 21 billion euros in federal states by 2026.
Since spring 2020, more than 400 employees from Emden are said to have been deployed in Zwickau to prepare for electric vehicle production.

“Rapid expansion of production capacities for our successful ID.4 model is a key component of our ACCELERATE strategy,” says Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter. “It helps us accelerate the transformation to zero-carbon mobility and create further capacities to meet the high demand for electric vehicles.”
Overall Volkswagen employs 130,000 people in Lower Saxony. The next EV model will be produced in Emden next year and the following year.
In total, Volkswagen delivered more than 30,000 ID.4 models in the first quarter of 2022 and 163,000 since their launch last year making it Volkswagen’s best-selling EV model. There are currently around 73,000 orders for this model worldwide.
