Turkish Manufacturer Bozankaya Wins Prague’s Largest Trolleybus Contract Amid Controversy

Turkish manufacturer Bozankaya has secured a milestone contract with Prague transport company DPP for up to 70 trolleybuses, marking the largest order of its kind in the Czech Republic.

The $50 million framework agreement will span five years, with the new vehicles set to serve several key routes in the capital. The decision to award the contract to Bozankaya has sparked discontent from Czech manufacturer Skoda Group, which previously contested the deal.

Bozankaya’s winning bid includes the delivery of 12-meter-long SNG T12 trolleybuses, capable of carrying 82 passengers, including 32 seated. Equipped with traction batteries that allow up to 15 kilometers of off-wire travel, these vehicles are designed for flexibility and efficiency on routes 131, 137, 176, 191, and 201. Despite Skoda’s objections, including claims of alleged illegal subsidies and concerns over delivery timelines, the procurement decision was upheld.

Founded in Germany in 1989 and later relocated to Turkey in 2003, Bozankaya has established itself as a significant player in the public transport industry. The company operates a production facility in Sincan near Ankara, manufacturing a range of vehicles, including underground trains, trams, trolleybuses, and electric buses. Bozankaya’s innovative approach to electric mobility began with its Sileo series in 2013, a line it later sold to Karsan.

Prague’s trolleybus network, revived in 2017 after a decades-long hiatus, now incorporates battery-powered autonomy, enabling operations on sections without overhead lines. While other manufacturers, including Skoda and Solaris, also contribute to the city’s fleet, Bozankaya’s record-breaking order underscores its growing influence in the sector.
