Hanoi has added three fully electrified bus routes—lines 05, 39, and 47—supported by a fleet of 46 electric buses supplied by a local manufacturer, marking a significant step toward the city’s goal of converting its entire bus network to electric by 2030.
The new fleet comprises 35 medium-sized buses with seating for up to 60 passengers and 11 smaller buses accommodating up to 30 people. While the Hanoi Transport Corporation (Transerco) has not disclosed the exact make and model of the buses, press images indicate they are VinBus models, manufactured by VinFast, a prominent Vietnamese electric vehicle company.
VinFast’s electric buses are equipped with batteries offering a capacity of up to 218 kWh, enabling a range of 260 kilometers per charge, with a recharge time of two hours. VinBus, which first announced plans to produce 3,000 electric buses for Vietnam in 2019, is now actively piloting these vehicles in the capital.
Hanoi’s commitment to electric transit builds on earlier initiatives. In 2020, VinBus partnered with Star Charge to deploy charging infrastructure for electric buses across Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc, targeting fleets of 150 to 200 units in these urban centers. The electrification of public transit is a key component of Hanoi’s sustainability agenda, with the city aiming to become a leader in green transportation within the region.
