Aachen-based startup Trailer Dynamics has received a €25 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to accelerate the scaling, production and commercial launch of its eTrailer technology. The financing is supported by the EU’s InvestEU program, which aims to mobilise hundreds of billions of euros in public and private investment by 2027.
Trailer Dynamics’ eTrailer is a semi-trailer equipped with its own electric powertrain, designed to reduce the load on the tractor unit regardless of whether it is powered by diesel, gas, batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. The company says pairing the trailer with a diesel tractor can cut fuel consumption by up to 40 percent, while combining it with electric tractors can extend driving range from around 400 kilometres to approximately 700 kilometres. These performance gains have been validated through real-world trials with operators including DB Schenker, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
The company positions its technology as a near-term emissions reduction tool as diesel-powered trucks continue to dominate long-haul fleets. “Trailer Dynamics’ solution enables operators to act now, bridging the truck electrification gap, reducing emissions from existing diesel fleets while extending the capabilities of new electric trucks,” the firm said.
EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer said the loan supports Europe’s transition to low-carbon freight. “The energy transition cannot wait — it needs solutions that deliver real impact today and compete head-on with fossil-based methods,” she said. “Trailer Dynamics’ e-trailer technology does exactly that: cutting emissions, reducing fuel costs, and extending electric truck range without compromising on performance or affordability.”
Michael W. Nimtsch, CFO of Trailer Dynamics, described the financing as a significant endorsement. “The funding provided by the EIB represents a strong vote of confidence in our mission and will play a crucial role in scaling our solution across Europe,” he said. Advisory Board Chairman Stefan Binnewies added that the collaboration demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can advance together.
Each eTrailer features an electrified axle powered by two electric motors and lithium iron phosphate batteries. Trailer Dynamics’ intelligent powertrain control system manages the electrified axle in real time to optimise energy use and vehicle performance.
