Tesla has quietly introduced a range upgrade for the Model Y in India less than two months after its local launch, keeping the price unchanged. The improvement affects the Long Range RWD variant, extending its WLTP-rated range from 622 to 661 kilometres.
According to a report from Autocar Professional, the 6.3% or 39-kilometre increase in range comes from a new 84.2 kWh battery pack equipped with higher energy-density cells supplied by LG Energy Solution. The previous version used a 79 kWh battery pack, while the vehicle’s motor and performance figures — including a 0–100 kph acceleration time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 201 kph — remain unchanged.

Deliveries of the Model Y began last month, with the first unit handed over in Mumbai to Maharashtra State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. Tesla currently operates showrooms in Mumbai and Delhi, accepting online orders nationwide. The company has also started building its charging infrastructure, installing four 250 kW Superchargers and four 11 kW Destination Chargers in Mumbai, and a similar setup in Delhi. Isabel Fan, Tesla’s Senior Director for Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Macau, said the firm plans to expand charging facilities to Gurugram and Bengaluru next.
“India is an important market for us, and expanding the charging network is key to supporting our growing customer base,” Fan said at the Delhi showroom opening.
Despite early interest, the Model Y has seen limited sales since its debut. Industry reports indicate Tesla received just over 600 orders within six weeks of launch, prompting the company to lower its import target for the year from 2,500 units to between 350 and 500. Only 60 units were reportedly delivered in the first month.

The Model Y is priced at 5.989 million rupees (about €58,400) for the Standard Range RWD and 6.789 million rupees (about €66,200) for the Long Range RWD, excluding on-road costs. While the high price remains a challenge in India’s competitive EV market, the extended range could enhance the vehicle’s appeal.
Separately, Tesla has introduced a new entry-level Standard Range RWD variant in the United States and select European markets. A recent Reuters report said the version, featuring a smaller and slower-charging battery pack along with fewer comfort and connectivity features, is about 20% cheaper to produce than the current Standard Range RWD, which now carries a “Premium” label.
