Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk provided new details this week on a forthcoming update to the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, describing it as a “major step-change improvement” aimed at reducing driver intervention in many driving scenarios. The update is anticipated to roll out to Tesla vehicles sometime in September, Musk said.
Tesla has been developing its FSD technology over several years, striving toward a version that allows drivers to become passengers with minimal or no need to pay attention to the road. Musk emphasized that while the September update will make significant progress, full autonomy where no driver supervision is required is not yet available.

“The FSD software update next month will be a major step-change improvement for rare conditions,” Musk said, highlighting enhancements designed to better handle unusual or complex driving situations. He added that the update will “substantially reduce the need for driver attention,” but cautioned that some circumstances such as “complex intersections, heavy weather or unusual events” will still require drivers to remain engaged and ready to take control.
In previous announcements, Musk had indicated ambitions for FSD to reach unsupervised driving capabilities “by the end of the year,” but this latest statement did not reiterate that timeline. Tesla also reportedly has a more advanced version of the software used internally for its Robotaxi project in Austin, Texas, which Musk described as sometimes feeling “eerily human” in its driving behavior.

The company’s approach to refining FSD relies heavily on collecting real-world driving data and leveraging neural networks to improve system performance over time. With each software build, Tesla aims to make the system more reliable and capable for public use.
As Tesla prepares for the September release, industry observers and Tesla drivers alike await the next milestone in the company’s pursuit of autonomous driving.
